About us

We are the 'Smarticles,' who hope to introduce an infusion of arts and crafts into learning about climate change and energy efficiency. We have activated our campaign for the 'One Good Idea' competition, and hope to make teenagers more environmentally aware in the process. Check out our site, and become a Smarticle too!

Our Campaign

Our campaign is composed of three main elements; Smart, Art and Articles. By creating online resources (Articles) for both students and teachers, focusing on various topics associated with climate change and energy efficiency, we hope to make teenagers environmentally Smart. By introducing the creative element of Art we aim to offer an incentive for teens to become more interested and involved with this important issue.

Meet the team
We are a group of Transition Year students who love art as well as environmental studies. We have activated a campaign for the 'One Good Idea' competition. We are all really passionate about art and feel that since teenagers are amongst the greatest instigators of change, and the next generation of environmentalists, we think it's important for them to be aware of the topic.  Furthermore, creativity in learning is a great combination for fun, effective teaching techniques.
Get invloved

Get involved in our campaign, by creating our fun room accessories and watch the 'how to' videos that accompany them. Follow us on Twitter and Facebook to stay updated. Don't forget to check out our weekly blog and articles too!

Our Objectives

  • To provide an online resource in the form of 'articles' for both teachers and students, to help them to teach/learn about climate change and energy efficiency.

  • To introduce an 'infusion of art' into the current curriculum, in order to promote creativity and independent learning.

  • To make teens more aware of the environment and the problems it currently faces, and to make them environmentally 'smart.'

  • Overall, we aim to raise awareness about climate change and encourage people to explore their creative side in the process! Check out our prezi and learn all about Smarticles..

The Earth’s climate is driven by a continuous flow of energy from the sun. Energy in the form of heat, from the sun, passes through the Earth’s atmosphere and warms the Earth’s surface. As the temperature increases, the Earth sends heat energy (infrared radiation) back into the atmosphere. Some of this heat is absorbed by gases in the atmosphere, such as carbon dioxide (CO2) , water vapour, methane, nitrous oxide, ozone andhalocarbons.

Watch this video from National Geographic for a short visual explanation of climate change.

Climate Change Explained

These gases, which are all naturally occurring, act as a blanket, trapping in the heat and preventing it from being reflected too far from the Earth. They keep the Earth's average temperature at about 15°C: warm enough to sustain life for humans, plants and animals. Without these gases, the average temperature would be about -18°C... too cold for most life forms. This natural warming effect is also sometimes called the greenhouse effect. Carbon dioxide, or CO2, is the most significant of the gases in our atmosphere which keep the Earth warm.

4 billion years ago its concentration in the atmosphere was much higher than today - 80% compared to today's 0.03%. But most of it was removed through photosynthesis over time.
